“A national treasure A rare and lovely book.” —The Cleveland Plain Dealer “A saga filled with joy and pain, humor and bitterness, and an array of characters who live, breathe, and illuminate the world.” —Publishers Weekly “My go-to comfort novel is The Color Purple, by Alice : Penguin Publishing Group. The Purple Plain is a strong favorite that hits an emotional chord with audiences; Robert Parrish's subdued direction and Eric Ambler's story details have an unspoken feeling of faith and abiding inner peace. It's a basic "theraputic" tale in that we see the emotional healing of a flyer that the R.A.F. thinks may have gone 'round the bend.

It's title and even some advertising hinted at a Western, but The Purple Plain () is, in fact, a British-made World War II movie set in Burma. Based on H.E. Bates's novel, the movie is also a story of interracial romance, with tragic widower Gregory Peck falling in love with beautiful Win Min Than, impressive in what turned out to be her only movie. The experience inspired three novels of the far East, The Purple Plain, The Jacaranda Tree, and The Scarlet Sword. Bates writes of his first morning in Burma (pp. ) where he was exposed to the "ideas and pictures" that formed the "genesis" of The Purple Plain ; in addition (pp. ) he writes of learning, on his return to England.
